Chegg does not notify your school, thanks to its strict privacy policy and commitment to protecting student users. Chegg will not inform your school when you utilize it for your assignments; however, that does not deter your school from finding out the source of your answers.

Does Chegg Notify Your School?

Chegg Study works at all levels of study, giving answers to assignments that other school students have done. You risk being caught if you copy-paste. This results in plagiarism which can create suspicion on academic integrity and warrant investigation by your school.

In such a case, the school may request Chegg for details to support their ongoing investigation. In the past Chegg would send a report of all the people who viewed their solution, which the school could look through to find your name.

However, on 8 August 2022, Chegg updated its honor code policy to only provide colleges with dates and time stamps of when questions are posted or answered by students.

According to their honor code, they will cooperate with official investigations:

“Professors and official representatives of a college or university can request an honor code investigation.

Upon verification of the request, Chegg will provide the following information for each URL submitted:

  • Time and date stamp of question posted
  • Time and date stamp of solution posted

To ensure we protect the privacy of our users, we do not share personal information as part of honor code investigations.”

As long as you avoid plagiarism, it is safe for use for assignments and projects. You have to ensure you tweak the answers to make them as original as possible instead of copy-pasting the entire answer.

For example, if you are looking for answers to a specific question that millions of students have searched for, you can add information related to the answer. This will ensure your answer is unique yet meaningful, and you will not be caught out for plagiarism.

Is Chegg Cheating?

There are student codes of conduct at every university that all freshmen are required to sign, and using Chegg Study to answer course questions directly is a violation of those student codes.

Whenever people mention Chegg or “chegging,” they’re usually referring to turning to homework-help sites, like Chegg Study, to copy down answers instead of doing work themselves.

It is acceptable to use Chegg Study simply to understand the problems, but to use it to answer homework questions is against many colleges’ codes of conduct.

When you do your homework assignment using Chegg Study to find answers to college questions or even to check your answers, it can be seen as a form of cheating. Even though you’re still learning while finding the answers to your questions, you’re not following the correct route in researching the subject matter.

When you use Chegg to copy answers, you miss a handful of study materials on the subject, as it gives direct answers for students to the specific questions they have. That is more like skimming through your coursework and getting correct answers to tests without researching.

Using Chegg Study to find the answers without studying the course material is seen as cheating. When you copy the answers as outlined by Chegg, you risk being caught and facing disciplinary action from your teachers.

Submitting homework questions to Check Study is probably the easiest way for your professors to discover that you might be cheating.

Here are several further downsides:

  • You do not learn from the study materials as you are not doing it yourself, making future projects even more difficult.
  • You risk failing your exam questions as you do not adequately understand the course from using Chegg repeatedly.
  • If you pass your homework but fail exam questions, it will be clear you are cheating, increasing the chances of being caught by your school.

Using Chegg as a study guide does not necessarily mean that you’re cheating. However, there’s no doubt that some Chegg Study subscribers use the service to answer homework questions.

Getting someone else to do coursework for you has always been seen as cheating, and that’s how some students use Chegg Study.

However, according to Forbes, Chegg CEO Dan Rosensweig disagreed that Chegg was built for cheating. He said that “Higher education needs to adjust to the on-demand economy, the way Uber or Amazon have. I don’t know why you can’t binge-watch your education, like you do everything else online. My view is education is going to have to come to us over the devices we have.”

Chegg does not tell your school you used it automatically; however, they can send out the time and date stamp of a question posted and answered to your school upon request. This is only possible if your school is suspicious of your work and wants to run an investigation of your homework.

What Can Chegg Tell Your School?

They can reveal your IP addresses every time you access the platform. They can also reveal your email address and billing address, academic institution, your name, the date and time you uploaded the assignment question, and when the expert tutor provided the assignment solution.

UPDATE: As of 8 August 2022, Chegg no longer sends private information to your school.

According to Chuck Barbee, the Academic Integrity Officer for Fulton, they can access the answers to any solution on Chegg if they suspect that it’s been used.

“So it’s very easy to compare the Chegg solution to the student’s solution. We can get timestamps about when things were posted or when things were solved, and relating back to examination times. So while Chegg has retracted some of what they provide, they still provide a lot of information for universities.”

How To Use Chegg Without Getting Caught

You can use Chegg without being caught by ensuring your account details do not reveal your information, use a different browser from what you use, and only use Chegg as a study aid and not the ultimate guide to your homework.

Creating an Account

Do not use a personal credit card or debit card when creating your account. Use a Visa or Mastercard gift card to ensure you do not reveal your name on the account for payments. Chegg won’t share your card number, but they do store the name on the card. When registering for the gift card, use a different name and address.

You could also create a new Chegg account to cut the link between your past and future searches. But do not create a new one on a network you have used before. If you used your old one with your home network, make sure the new one runs on a different network to protect yourself.

Accessing Your Chegg Account

When accessing your Chegg account, use a different browser to ensure it is not linked to your usual web history. Alternatively, you could use a VPN to hide your IP address and protect your location online.

Do not use school wifi or any other public wifi as it is easy to trace. Use mobile data to hide your wifi IP address if you use it as your primary connection. Alternatively, use remote access to access Chegg and hide your primary computer.

Using Chegg When Taking An Exam

If you use Chegg to find exam answers, be careful with how you outline the questions and answers. You can mismatch them but ensure each answer is under its specific question.

Also, use a virtual machine to ensure your desktop behaves like a separate computer. This will hide your primary computer details, making it hard to trace back to your Chegg account.

Using Chegg When Writing Assignments

Use Chegg as a reference to study aid and not a complete guide to your answers. The best approach is to understand the question and how it is derived; that way, you use your own words to come up with an original answer.
