It used to be different in our household, the kids were always wanting to be attached to my hip, and now that they are teenagers, I have to beg them to spend time with me.
Now that you have teenagers, you will need to focus on the quality of the time that you spend with them more than the quantity. You’re no longer the center of their universe and they will want to spend more time with their friends instead.
So how can you spend quality time with your teen?
Don’t be afraid to just hang out with them. Just sitting with them and showing interest in what they’re doing is often a great way to bond.
You probably aren’t really interested in watching them play Fortnite (insert whatever game they may be into here), but sit and watch and see what happens.
Another great way to connect is by cooking and eating together.
I believe that all families should eat dinner together but you can also get them to help prepare food.
This works best if they get to choose their favorite meal, and then help you with that particular meal. In this way, everyone helps out separately and can feel proud of and enjoy the end result.
You can also work on cleaning out their rooms or spring cleaning together or do homework together as a way to bond.
- Your children will most likely want to spend more time with their friends than with you now that they’re teenagers.
- As there is less opportunity to spend time with them, it’s important to look for ways to spend quality time with your teens
- Find ways to just hang out with them whenever the opportunity arises.
- Eating and cooking together, and doing schoolwork together are all good ways of bonding.
